Baritone Roman Hoza studied in Brno and Vienna. He is a graduate of the prestigious Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival and opera studies at the Opera National de Lyon and Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf.
In 2015, he made his debut at the National Theatre in Prague as Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro and has been a regular guest there ever since (Don Giovanni, Dandini, Mamma Agata, Harlequin). Since September 2016, he has been a permanent ensemble member of the National Theater Brno, where he has created many baritone roles such as Don Giovanni, Guglielmo, Rossini's Figaro, Belcore, Escamillo, Marcello, Danilo etc.
In the 2019/20 season, Roman Hoza returned to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, first as a guest (Dandini in Rossini's La Cenerentola) and a year later as a member of the permanent ensemble. You could and still can see him on the local stage as Papageno, the Count in The Marriage of Figaro, Taddeo, Belcore or in the title role of Mozart's Don Giovanni.
Roman Hoza is also a sought-after interpreter of concert repertoire. Carmina Burana, Dvořák's Te Deum, Haydn's Creation or The Seasons can regularly be found in his calendar. In October 2023, he performed in Dvořák's The Spectre's Bride under the baton of Jakub Hrůša with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia orchestra in Rome. Thanks to his extensive collaboration with Václav Luks and Collegium 1704 and other Baroque ensembles (Ensemble Inégal, Musica Florea, Czech Ensemble Baroque), he has performed many times as a soloist in Handel's Messiah, as Jesus in St. John Passion, and others.
In his career, Roman also focuses on art song especially Schumann, Mahler, Ravel, Ibert or Poulenc. He is a laureate of the song category of the Antonín Dvořák International Competition in Karlovy Vary. He performed Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe cycle accompanied by Ahmad Hedar in the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum. Mahler's Songs of a Wayfarer were then performed in 2022 under the baton of Robert Kružík with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra. His renditions of French songs (Ravel, Ibert, Poulenc) were heard in Düsseldorf in the summer of 2023.
Roman Hoza is a regular guest at Czech and foreign opera houses, philharmonic orchestras, and festivals. He has collaborated with conductors such as Jakub Hrůša, Axel Kober, Marc Piollet, David Crescenzi, Daniele Rustioni, Tomáš Netopil, and Vassily Sinaisky, and has performed in productions by David Radok, Andriy Zholdak, Tatjana Gürbac, Michael Hampe, Jiří Heřman, and many others.
