Svatopluk Sem - baritone

Svatopluk Sem is a permanent guest of the National Theatre in Prague, J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen, National Theatre Brno, National Moravia-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava and South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice. He is a laureate of the Thalia Award for the Best Male Opera Performance in 2017.


Svatopluk Sem studied voice under the guidance of D. Volfová at the Conservatory in České Budějovice. He became a soloist in the South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice after finishing his studies. Here he portrayed many main characters such as Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Germonte (La traviata), Valentin (Faust), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Guglielmo (Cosí fan tutte) or Belcore (L´elisir d´amore).

He regularly performs in nearly all opera houses in the Czech Republic such as the National Theatre in Prague, the National Theatre Brno or the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava above all. His repertoire includes several dozen roles of different nature.

In Czech opera houses, Svatopluk Sem has been performing in productions of various directors – M. Forman, O. Havelka, J. Heřman, , J. Menzel, The Theatre Group SKUTR (M. Kukučka & L. Trpišovský), David Radok and cooperated with many famous conductors. J. Bělohlávek, E. Dovico, E. Fiore, T. Hanus, J. Hrůša, Jan Latham-Koenig, O. Lenárd, T. Netopil, L. Pešek – to name but a few.
He has made his appearance not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad. Japan, Denmark, South Korea, Austria, Spain, Germany, Russia, Italy or Great Britain are examples of countries where Svatopluk Sem could be seen on stage. He cooperates with orchestras such as the Czech Philharmonic, , PKF – Prague Philharmonia, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, where he has been a permanent guest performer.

In the season 2015/2016 he and his colleagues from The State Opera in Prague went on tour across Japan where he performed as Germont in La Traviata. In April 2016 he made his appearance at the prestigious BBC Proms Festival in London in a performance of Janáček´s Věc Makropulos together with Karita Matilla accompanied by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In the Italian opera house Teatro Regio di Torino he performed as Forester in Janáček´s Příhody lišky Bystroušky under the baton of Jan Latham-Koenig, directed by R. Carsen.

He cooperated with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the baton of J. Bělohlávek on a recording of Smetana's Bartered Bride for the label Harmonia Mundi. In 2014 he recorded a documentary "Rolando meets Don Giovanni" for the BBC, where he performed in the role of Don Giovanni.

He is a frequent guest of prestigious international music festivals such as the BBC Proms, Český Krumlov IMF, Dvořákova Praha IMF, Opern Air Gars am Kampf in Austria, The Prague Spring IMFor the International Opera Festival Smetana's Litomyšl.

In his field he has received three times the prestigious Karel Roden Award.
